Beginner gardener wanting to start a green house, Good idea or bad?
    Hey guys,
I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to gardening, I have managed to grow potato plants in garbage cans, very surprised that it worked as well as it did.
We live in northern canada and we don't get a whole lot of summer. I would like to cut down the cost of our grocry bills so I started growing my own herbs, and I am interested in starting a green house, but I am uneducated in that department and I am unsure as to how well a green house will do in in northern alberta.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I wouldn't advise a greenhouse in your part of the country if you especially suffer from cold north winds; it won't matter if you have the greenhouse facing in the right direction or not, to catch the benefit of hot sun.

This is a project that a beginner gardener should not attempt, for the main reason that the plants that would most thrive in this environment would be hit and miss unless you knew the plants you wanted well, i.e. germination time (heat dependent). Then the question of soil in a greenhouse, moisture content, etc.

I have included an article from E.How, you will have to 'greenhouses' in the search area, but the article is informative and will give you some idea of what you want to get into.

Please do not hesitate to post again after reading the article.

E how basically said I would need to have a heater/ heat bricks, and grow lamps, which I already have, I also have a solar panel that can run both. But I'm still not sure if all the effort will be worth the result.
