    Getting a good job
Hi, recently I was speaking with a Professor at the University of Waterloo, and I told her what courses I was taking, and I told her that I was possibly interested in Majoring in English, because my first job choice would be a high school English teacher, and second, a Psychologist.
However, she told me that oddly enough, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I wouldn't be able to find any jobs. This strikes me as a little odd, because I know a lot of teachers who started with their BA and then of course upgraded as well, but I'm not asking for a BA alone, but if I just had a BA, would that get me a job alone? Or would I need to go for a Masters or PHD?

A BA will get your foot in the door of the world of work.

My BA (Elem Educ / Amer & Eng Lit) got me a grade school teaching job (although now a master's is expected within a reasonable amount of time), jobs in retail, a sec'y job with State Farm, two hospital jobs, and a public library job at the front desk and as back-up reference. I now have a master's in counseling psych (MS) and a partial one in library science, both of which have opened up more doors for me. If I were younger, I would get a second master's (probably library science) or an MD for psychiatry. The master's in psych is very adaptable to many different fields.

Thanks so much, I've gotten nothing but negativity from that Professor, and I much appreciate your facts and effort in answering my question. All the best to you!
