    What is the best form of exercise?
    Hi there all,

    What would other think is the best for of exercise to accomplish maximum overall fitness.

    I was thinking exercise such as a combination of Swimming, Running and weight training.

    I think particularly Swimming is good as it works the cardiovascular system as well as many different muscle groups.

    Any thoughts?

    Swimming is by far one of the best by far. Actually one of the most lectured forms of exercise in Nursing School so far.

    A study I read several years ago compared numerous physical activities (including the ones you mentioned) by rating each area of the body in three categories: strength, flexibility, and endurance. The clear winner was judo/karate. Every other activity failed in one of the three categories or did not exercise a major body part.

    I find Badminton and Tennis quite good too. The gym is O.K. but I have always found sport more interesting and easier to maintain as it is more competitive if you like.

    A lot of people these days join the gym but give up after 3 months. So I think the Gym should be balanced with a sport of some sort. A kind of addition to your fitness to help you become more fit for the sport.

    Hi Geoff,

    I also heard rowing was pretty good as far as working a lot of different areas of the body.
    Not sure how accurate that is, but when I use my rower at home, it sure does feel like I am using most of my muscles.

    Yes... Rowing is good, but it is B***dy hard when you really get stuck into it. I think a combination of eveything is good + variety helps keep the exercise routine alive..

    Would you agree?

    Absolutely.

    Boredom and lack of interest will surely kill motivation. I also started taking long walks.
    Plug the music in my ears and off I go. That helps to clear the mind also. I feel so free when I do that, I just need to look better for on-coming cars:eek:

    Hi,

    I personally lost 32 lbs and I did a variety of things to prevent boredom, as I still do. Anything that gets your heart rate up is a good form of exercise. I bike, hike, take step classes, yoga, play softball, circuit training. Weight training is great as it not only makes you stronger but helps lose inches. Keep moving and good luck!

    Funny, I was just thinking about this and came across this question. I was just thinking that a variety of exercise is good. I enjoy the gym, swimming and dance classes. I would agree about swimming being good, as you use lots of muscles that you woudn't normally use for other activities. I think if you do the same thing every time at the gym, this works for some, on a fitness level - but can become boring. It is good to do classes, I would recommend this to people. Normally there is soemthing to suit most people, yoga, dancing, body combat, body pump (weights). I also enjoy running but I don't have time to a lot of running. I am going to try and do more at the gym, I can't get a chance while so many people with new year resolutions take up all the equipment! Plus there are too many kids just now, I saw a girl on the treadmill with her school uniform on!

    Give it another 2 months and most in the packed gyms will have chucked in the towel... Except the committed ones!

    I just read an article in sports illustrated and the number one sport that focuses on endurance, flexibility, and strength is women's long distance skiing number two on that list is ballet dancing. The best part of that is dance isn't even considered a sport when football, ping pong and basketball are. There is abviously something wrong with that.
