How do you good at pull ups
I just bought a pull up bar from wal mart with hopes of widening my shoulders and beefing up my biceps. When I tried them, I found I could only do 4. After I figured out I could only do 4, I wanted to cheat and only go down half way so that maybe I could do 8 and get a better work out. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET GOOD AT CHINS? I have heard some talk about doing 6 small sets a day, EVERY day. I am against this because after just doing 2 sets of 4 and all my other work outs (I only do chins as part of my work out), I was sore enough. It was 1 day ago since I tried chin ups because I am letting my muscles recover from the overload I gave them. Will I be better at them when I try them again next time, or will I be the same?? :(

To help yourself build up with them, try "kipping". Here's an explanation:

Of course you get less of a workout then dead hang pull-ups, but by kipping you will be able to increase your reps faster.

;) My guess is that if you can do 4 good pull-ups from a dead hang, then you'll be able to do a dozen or so by kipping once you get the hang of it.

Pull ups not only are one of the best work outs for your upper body they can gain you great size and strength. To get good at them takes time but the cost is greatly worth the outcome. All you have to do is do as many as you can everyday 2 times a day, and really work hard. The harder you work and strain the better you will get at them. I had the same problem and this worked for me.

You could try doing negatives after you have done as many full reps as possible, remember there is no point cheating by only doing half reps all you do is cheat a little more each time to enable you to do another rep, in case u don't know what negatives are, you may not have the strength to do a fifth rep but you will have the strength to stand on a chair or bench and from the top position of the chin up lower yourself slowly till your arms are straight, some advise to take 60 seconds to lower but that is really hard for anyone, just lower as many times as possible until u can no longer do another rep

If you wanted wide delts from a chinning bar you got to check an anatomy and exersice list or something. Chins train primarily the lats then the biceps. Doing 6 small sets every day is 1 of the stupidist thigs I've heard of it goes against all muscle building laws. Try this set a rep goal say 50 do as many sets as it takes to get that 50. Do it evey 4th day.muscles grow while resting. Every time increse rep # by 5 till you can do 10 reps in 1 set then do ten sets every 5 days of pull ups. Seriosly you got to train other muscle groups. By free weights a barbell and dumb bells or join a gym.
