My son was born in jersey can I change his name at a court house in Puerto Rico?
:confused:I want to add my son's father name to his US birth certificate and change his his last name as well. I know I'd have to go to the court house and so on. But the thing is, we're living in the caribbean now, my son was born in New Jersey, do we have to go back to New Jersey to get it done, or can we go to any US state e.g. puerto rico, or st croix? Can a professional in family law help me? I really need to know..

The only way you can do anything to the birth certificate would be to have him declared the legal father of the child. As far as the name change you can do that on a local level so long as you meet that countries residency requirements. Declaring him the father can also be done where you are as well if you meet the requirements.

Be sure to contact the US Consulate and ask for sure that the US will honor the courts decision there.

A name change so long as its legal should be recognized by the U.S.

Here is a list for you.
