    Minor Pregnancy Abortion Q.
If a minor 16 or under becomes pregnant, are the parents legally allowed to force her into an abortion? Or is it up to the teen?

    Hello U:

I don't believe there's LAW on the subject. But, if she doesn't want the abortion, she should REFUSE.

Yes, the young girl can indeed refuse to have the procedure done.

But can the parents force her into it? If she has refused but they say they will force her, can they?

They cannot force her to do it.

Can they make life uncomfortable for her? Absolutely. They're her parents. They can ground her and cut off her friends and insist on ridiculous curfews and refuse to acknowledge or help with the pregnancy and any number of things that suck.

But they can NOT force her to have an abortion. No one can FORCE you to do it.

They can ALSO refuse to support the child once it is born--which is within their rights. They have to care for their own child legally, but not HER child.

I highly suggest that she go to Planned Parenthood and talk with them as soon as possible so that she knows her rights and her choices.

    Hello again, U:

they say they will force her, can they?
Unless they hold a gun to her head, they CANNOT force her. Can they TALK her into it?? Sure, but that's NOT force.

Teens aren't often clear about what 'force' means. They might drag her into a car and drag her into an abortion clinic, but there isn't a doctor in the US who would perform the abortion against her will, because the Supreme Court says she has this control over her body.

As others have said, they can make her life miserable, and refuse to give her all the care she will need. It's quite probable that she doesn't have a single clue what being pregnant, and being a mother for the next 18 years, means. It's 24/7, it's extremely expensive, and she has to be prepared to give up all the fun of her teens and 20s, stuck in some welfare housing, miserable, after the cute little baby stage is over, and she can't even get enough diapers, never mind have any fun. Oh - and the boyfriend ditched her long, long ago.

Are you the person that the question is about? How old is this child? There may be other factors going on besides what is being told.

A parent can threaten the child, the child may have to even call CPS or police if the parents get abusive, But the child ( Teen) has the right to have the child and the parents can not stop it.

Generally your parents have no a say in it.
    Check your state laws here:
State Governments :: NARAL Pro-Choice America
And have in mind that in some states being pregnant means you are considered a full adult and may have automatic emancipation , thus your parents would no longer have any legal right /and financial obligation/over you.

I was reading your profile which mentions you live in Canada. If you are not the minor who is pregnant, does she live in Canada, too? If not, what country does she live in?

Do you want to talk with us about options, and how to deal with parents? Is it OK to assume we are talking about you? How pregnant are you (or is she) and how old?
