While I don't take the smoking to be that big of a deal, I would have to agree with you on your obvious outrage, the real question for me though is this. Where is the dad in all this? If he is as bad or worse than her you could be looking at/would need to look into if that child would go into foster care, because it well blows. Let me put it this way on a scale from worst to bad you would have say parent abusing/raping a child, moving onto a complete junky, up to around where it sounds like your daughter is, then foster care. Make sure she would be able to stay in the family/with a responsible adult. Our foster care system is horrid. Also if your granddaughter is that young/wild id say look into having the mom appointed the legal guardian and have said mom check her into rehab.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to change your granddaughter, nor can you take her child away from her

And by the way, it is not child abandonment. Abandonment would be if she left the child alone to go partying. She left the child with you. That is not abandoning the child. She found and left the child with capable adult care.

There is nothing illegal here. She hasn't endangered the child, and as sad as it may be, and as much as I personally disagree with it, it is only my opinion, and half the time, mothers are allowed to be partiers, drinkers, druggies. As long as A: they don't get caught with the drugs, and B: the child isn't in any danger, nor is being neglected or abused. And it sounds like, though it's a crappy life, the child is cared for.

I would say the most you can do at this point would be to contact CPS with an anonymous call, and have then look into it. But you say you don't want to do this, so I guess you really have no other option but to either turn her away and refuse to help, or continue to help her by watching her child.

Yes, this is not child abandonment, not even close. She left the child with you, knowing the child would be cared for.

Smoking around the child is not good in my opinion but nothing illegal and not even a issue that could be used.

If you can prove she is not properly caring for the child, if you can prove she is a danger to the child, you can get CPS involved

But a even bigger issue, where is her mother ? Where does she normally live ? With her mom, with babbies daddy, and then where is the dad of the child

    Hello d:

Instead of complaining about how MUCH time he's left with you, I'd be wanting MORE time. If she doesn't show to pick him up, the BETTER for him AND you.
