Does Putting Gravel Underneath Turf Really Help to Disperse Water?
Hi, All!
I've seen people do that previously under their lawn. Does doing that really help to disperse the water so that it doesn't just stand there in one place, please?
Thanks!

Are you talking about a drainage system or simply laying down gravel, then sod (or topsoil and seed)? I have a drainage system which involves some pipes, some gravel, topsoil and then sod.

Hi, Judy!
I'm writing about just gravel and nothing else.
Thanks!

We would have to know a lot more about your property. Gravel helps but does not direct the water, it still must flow downhill and to where? A french drain would help drain a soggy area but it is more than just gravel and stioll must drain somewhere. Turf on gravel will not survive. How To Build a French Drain | DoItYourself.com

If u put gravel under soil with nothing over gravel, over time soil will fill spaces in gravel and serve not purpose.
As Bob said we need more info as to reason.

After it rains, water sits next to my back sidewalk that comes from the house. The backyard is flat, but I live with other neighbors on a very large hill.
Thanks!

You would need to dig a trench from the wet spot to a much lower spot. The slope of the trench should be at least 1/4" per foot. Bed of gravel, cloth covered perforated drain pipe, cover with gravel and then bring to grade with soil and seed

To add to Bob's post, trench should be parallel to walkway were water is collecting and then perpendicular to take water away. If can't get enough distance from walk, terminate pipe in a dry well.
Don't know how to add picture of dry well.
