    Outlook rules and alerts
    Hi,
I am using MS Outlook 2003 configured with Exchange 2003 on WinXP sp3.

I am using Laptop and Desktop.
Outlook is configured on both through Lan.

But I created rules and alerts on Laptop and that is not working on my Desktop.
They seemed to be client rule only.
Now I already created lots of rules both on Laptop and Desktop.
Because sometimes I sit on Desktop and sometimes on Laptop.

    Now I can't delete rules.
I want to know, How I can merge my Laptop rules to desktop or vice verse?
I tried but it leads to duplication of rules or afraid to overwriting rules.

I want to sync them or merge.
Is it possible or any other software that can do this for me.
    Please help.
    Thanks

There are two types of rules when you are using Outlook with Exchange. There are client based rules and there are server based rules. The difference between the two is in what actions you have requested in the rule.

If you request an action that requires the assistance of your computer such as playing a sound, showing a popup notification, etc. then it becomes a Client based rule. The only way you can show a popup or play a sound is if your computer is running and Outlook is running to process the rule.

When you request actions such as organizing your email or responding to an email using a server based template, then these rules can be stored on the server within your Mailbox and the server can process and perform the actions in the rules regardless of what computer you have turned on or if you are logged into your mailbox.

Client based rules are stored on your computer within your Outlook Profile and server based rules are stored in your Mailbox on the server. The server based rules will syncronize with your Outlook Profile when you connect to your mailbox.

Also, since you can have multiple Outlook Profiles with your same user profile, they are exclusive of each other. They do not use the same Nicknames Cache, Offline Cache, preferences or Client-side Rules.

To properly work with your Client based rules, you must also use the same Outlook Profile they were created with. The Exchange Server will attempt to fully synchronize your rules but this can sometimes cause corruption or errors in the Client based rules. It is best to delete the rule and recreate it.

Try removing the specific actions that change the rule from a Client based rule to a Server based rule.

    Thanks for response,

But when I create rule, it shows client only and on this machine only.
    What is mean by that.
    Please explain.
