    File Changes format during transit
Could someone enlighten us ( a small community non profit group) why a DOC file would change to a DAT file during email transit from only that persons PC to the rest of our group's PC ? ( 25 persons)

I assume the sender might be using Win 98 and some other users have XP and a small number of users may have MACs and or Linux.

Just some clues would do of where to look.

Personaly I think the sender opened the original DOC file with another Application other than MS Word and saved it with that other Application, but swears they uses MS Word anyway.

Could a DOC file that has changed to a DAT file contain a virus/trojan ?

    Thanks.

Did the extension just change or was the only attachment something like email.dat. If the latter, its most likely that the recipient can't receive HTML mail or has some other restriction on attachments that caused the attachment to be folded into a DAT file.

    Hi,
It could have something to do with the format of the person's email. If he/she is using Outlook, then have them try the following:

    Open Outlook.
At the top, click on Tools, then Options.
    Click on the MailFormat tab.
Click on Message Format, then click on Plain Text, then OK.
I am not absolutely sure if this is the problem, but it's worth a try.
    Best of luck.
