Define "load shed".

In what context have you come across this term?

Well, I came across a facility that uses load sheds to control different parts of the plant? I've tried to research them, but haven't received the knowledge I would like out of my research.

Load shedding is a concept, or a power management strategy, not a particular part or component.

What Is Load Shedding?

Often times the term is used loosely, or incorrectly.

A large industrial facility would "load shed" by turning off load if requested by the utility during peak demand periods.

I have a brick plant that can get a call from the utiltiy, say during the summer, to shut off load, because of high demand in the area due to air conditionng loads.

Another usage of the term would be to turn on loads selectively. If for example I have a heat treating facility that has 6 - 50 KW furnaces, I would want to turn each furnace on one at a time.

Because of "demand" KW billing by the utility, turning on all 6 furnaces at once would result in a very large electric bill. I can reduce that demand bill by turning on each furnace one at a time.
