I have just removed an old ceiling fan. It had two switches... one that controlled the light and one for the fan. I am replacing it with a regular light fixture that has one white wire and one black wire. Problem is there is also a red wire and a green wire. Where do I put these extra wires? With the blacks or whites? :rolleyes:

Most likely, the red wire is a second hot wire (the first being the black wire). Since you had two circuits (a. Light, b. Fan), you needed two switches and two hot wires (they can share the neutral white wire).

Safety note: Turn off the power at the breaker panel before attempting to work on this!

One of the switches will have the red wire connected it. If that switch is the one you want to use (closest to the door, for example), then cap off the black wire in the ceiling box with a wire nut and electrical tape. If you want to use the other switch instead, cap off the red wire in the ceiling box with a wire nut and electrical tape. In either case, the white wire will connect to the new light fixture's white wire, and the fixture's black wire will either connect to the red or black wire (whichever one is not capped off).

The green (ground) wire would be connected to the bare wire on your new light fixture, or there may be a green grounding screw on it. If there is neither, then cap off the green wire with a wire nut and electrical tape.
