Installing Hunter 27182 Ceiling Fan and Light Control
I have an existing ceiling fan and light. The light is controlled by a wall switch and the fan is controlled by the pull chains. There are 3 wires coming into the switch box. Two have black and white wires, the other has a black, white and red wire. The three white wires are connected together, the three black wires and one of the switch wires are connected and the second wire from the switch is connected to the red wire. Can I use a Hunter 27182 control and if so how do I connect it? Thanks.

I need to understand the wiring of the switches.

The two wire switch. Is that the switch for the light? Do you have white (With either black tape or black marking ) connected to one side of the switch and black to the other. At the fan, outlet, you should find the white from the switch connected to the supply black this conductor should also be marked with black tape or marker. The black from the fan should be connected to the "Blue" usually blue anyway.

For the 3 wire conductor, black to the switch is connect to the black supply cable at the fan outlet, red from the switch will be connected to the black on the fan. White from the switch connects to the white from the supply. At the switch, black is the supply wire for the switch. Red is the return wire from the switch. White is the Neutral conductor. Some newer design switches require the use of the neutral conductor. If your switch require neutral, connect it as shown in the directions. If it is not required, cap it off and place in the rear od the switch box. As always, make sure the bare copper ground conductors are properly connected to the switches.

    Thank you for your response.

I only have one switch and it controls just the light. The power for the fan is always on and I use the pull chains to turn the fan on and off.
