I have one switch that controls a light and fan. How do I separate the switches?
I thought I was pretty good at simple electrical work but this one has really halted my half bath remodel. I've tried various connections and its not working.

Currently, the wires were going to one switch to control the light and the fan. Therefore, they would both come on at the same time. Obviously, I want to separate those switches so they work independently.

In the electrical box the following is in there:

    2 WHITE WIRES
    2 BLACK WIRES
    2 GROUNDING WIRES

Also in there is an electrical plug with a set of wires. I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with having the two separate switches. I'm using a Leviton Combination Two Switch.

    Any help is appreciated!

You must either install a 3 conductor with ground (4-wire) cable between the switch/outlet box and the fan/light combination or, install another 2 conductor (3-wire) cable.
