    Flickering Lights
    All of the sudden...
When we turn on our appliances downstairs, our lights in that area flicker. Why is this so? Should I be alarmed?? It has been doing this now for a couple of weeks.

    Thank You,
    Jenna Coy:eek:

I suspect there could be a variety of conditions that would result in that problem.

A few years ago I started experiencing light level changes with things like the refrigerator or microwave starting and stopping. The aspect that really got my attention was the kitchen ceiling lights getting brighter when the microwave operated. The voltage on the lighting and outlet circuits was rising significantly when there were large loads on other circuits. I was able to measure the phenomena all the way back to the wires between the electric meter and the fuse box (Yes, the house is old enough to not have breakers).

On their first visit the power company temporarily removed the meter from its mounting box and measured the voltages across the supply terminals with an ordinary voltmeter. Since there were no significant loads in that configuration the meter showed normal voltage and the field technician concluded their equipment and wiring was operating properly (I was unable to be home for that visit). However, the voltage fluctuations persisted when I returned home.

I arranged a second service call and managed to be home to supervise it. Describing my theory persuaded the technician to attach a loaded testing unit in place of the electric meter, confirming my theory that the wire between the utility pole and the meter lacked a proper neutral connection. Further examination located corroded wires where the cable to the meter was connected to the eye bolt supporting the wire from the utility pole. The neutral wire was completely interrupted and at least one of the hot wires was nearing failure.

Lots of reasons, have electrician check the back of all circuit breakers (guts) including the main. If the problem is with the wiring in the house or in the main electrical company is hard to determine unless they are involved in the testing. (need to check voltage while it is happening on the meter side of incoming.
