Faulty Neutral
The service on my 40 yr old Florida home needs to be updated from 100 amp (?) Anyway, the entire house is only on 2 circuits. In windy weather these past few weeks, the back side of my house flickers on and off and then power is lost completely. It is restored by itself (no breakers are tripped) but will sometimes do this 3-4x a day. An electrician friend said that the inside wires are tight and that there appears to be a faulty neutral.:confused: Would someone explain this in layman's terms, and what is the remedy? The neutral is the bare wire you see in the three wire overhead cable coming from the utility pole to your house.
Since this problem pops up during wind, the aerial cable is swinging in the wind, and the connection at one end is loose or corroded. Most likely, you will need the utility company to come out and check their connections of the aerial cable and at the transformer. Also have them check all connections in the meter, since most places this is off limits to an electrician. |

I was working on a street light .The con-ed feed was a two wire feed #6 wire. No load it read 120 v,with a 150 w load the voltage went to 70 v, why is this ? Could it be a faulty neutral and if so why does it read only a partial voltage ?
Dear Sir/Madam: Hello, I stared a furnace that has not run in over a year. Initially it fired up fine and ran for awhile. I shut it down and did not fire anymore. The blowers were working but the igniter did not glow. I tested for low and high voltage and realized the transformer had shorted out....
