    Fan speed switch
    What is the proper wiring diagram for replacing a 3 speed / 5 wire switch in a ceiling fan? I have four of the wires properly colored coded and hooked up, but, can not find where the last one goes, since I was not the one who removed the original old switch?

    Each fan manufacturer uses there own color code, along with the various switches that are made. There is no way someone here can help with out knowing the make of your fan,and the make and model number of your switch.

    Normally the switch is a four wire, one input or feed to the switch, and the other three are the 3 speeds to the fan, and then there is another pull chain switch just for the light.

    You may try to get support for the fan you have from the manufacturer, if is Hampton Bay, get ready for some frustration. Read the Stick note that this forum Administrator has posted regarding Hampton Bay. They are made exclusively for Home Depot by "King of Fans", and their support leaves a lot to be desired.

    If made by someone else, find there website and contact info and give them a try for help with the fan/switch wiring.

    As a last resort, you may find in your area a small appliance repair shop that works on fans, perhaps they can help.

    Sorry for not being specific or much help, not much we can do when there are so many fans, switches and color codes, that are not universal that allows someone that cannot see what you have.

    Actually, if your fan is made by any company that is not still in business, you're even even worse luck-- at least with a Hampton Bay fan you can go down to Home Depot, and ask them to open the box of the same model fan and let you look at how it's wired.

    The truth of the matter is, for any pullchain with more than 4 wires, there's no tettling how it's hooked up. THere are several different pullchain options hookup options, different brands and even different models within brands are different. That's why you have to take very careful not when you remove the existing switch. Otherwise your only hope is finding someone who has the same fan and can share how theirs is wired.

    Let us know what fan you have.. . And if you can, contact the person who removed the old switch and see if they have how it was hooked up.. . And if not, glare at them.

    Have a 3 speed fan with a light, all operated by remote. A problem occurred and now the remote does not work with either the light or the fan. Do not know if the remote is bad or the switch inside the remote. Any suggestions on finding out and what about replacing either one.

    Or is it easier to just buy a new fan.

    If the LED on the remote still lights, it is probably the receiver in the fan.
