The primary purpose of a service loop is so that the current flow does not run in a straight line and possibly shoot out of the weatherhead causing a fire.

Nahhh... It's because of the spin on the electrons. As they flow down the wire they get to spiralling around the wire which slows them up. The loop damps this out and this has the added benefit of helping the meter to count them accurately. :p

It that doesn't work, how about "the electricians had to use up some of their extra cable"?

I always thought the loop was extra slack in the cable in case someone hits the pole and the loop allows the cable to stretch while the pole bounces back and forth and not pull the cable out of the support?
