Hello, I read some other posts on the subject and got more confused because of the reference to "Connect 1" and Connect "L", my wires apparently are not marked.
This is my situation:
I have three lights connected to the bottom of the fan (maker unknown),
The lights will not turn off by means of pull chain, I need to take a cloth and unscrew the bulbs.
I opened up the bottom of fan to expose wiring; each light fixture has one black and one white wire coming from the fixture. The pull chain gizmo has two black wires, one coming from the front of the gizmo and one from the back. The one from the front was not connected to anything but laying at bottom of cup (wires not exposed), ALL BLACK (three from lights and one from pull chain gizmo) wires were connected to the BLUE wire hanging down from motor area, All WHITE wires were connected to the WHITE wire coming down from the motor area.
So thinking that the black wire from the front of the pull chain gizmo was not connected and needed to be... I connected it to the other four 4 black wires and blue wire. Still the pull chain doesn't work. And for added information, the fan or lights were NOT wired to the light switch on wall.
So, should I go and get a new pull chain device?

Sounds like someone bypassed bad pull switch.
Buy new pull chain switch, connect either black wire of switch to blue wire, and other black wire to blacks(going to lights).
The whites need to stay togehther.

So I guess you are saying there is no wall switch at all, hardwired directly to a circuit? Something is quite odd here. Like Strat says the switch appears to have been by passed but who would do that knowing there was no other switch? How long have you noticed this problem? I think the fan was, or maybe is, connected to a wall switch after all. What does this wall switch control if not the fan? Back to you for more info.

OK, I got it working... the black wire coming from the light pull chain that WAS NOT originally connected to anything, I connected this to the blue wire from motor ONLY, the other bk wire coming out of the pull chain switch is grouped together with thr bk wires coming from the lights and all 4 of these bk wires are together.
So one bk wire from pull chain to power blue, and all other bk wires (4) are put together.
Everything works

1 and L relate to the speed control switch.

Sounds like you got it wired correctly.
