Replaced 3-speed pull chain switch, now have only slow speed, can't find wiring diagram. It's a no name existing fan in house. Should I just keep swapping the wires around till I've got 3-speeds back?

One speed only after replacing the 3 speed control switch on a harbor breeze ceiling fan? I have checked the wiring 3 times and it is installed properly Why woukd I not get 3 peeds to work??

I replaced a Hampton bay three speed fan switch I put Black onL, Grey on 1, brown on 2, and purple on 3 and now fan only works on high and low after a couple of pulls no off or middle speed.

The wires from the fan are white, brown, purple, and gray. Which ones go where on the switch?

Wires were take off before by someone that lived here be4 so I want 2 fix the fan and I don't know where the wiers go and the packaging doesn't have it and I don't want 2 mess yhe fan up.:)
