    Adding phone jack
    I need to add a phone jack in my living room, Therea re no jacks close to this location. Fortunately the main phone "terminal" is in the basement just below the living room.

    I can get wire to main box downstairs but not sure of how to hook it up.

    1) what type of wire should I use ? Colors etc
    2) I currently have 3 jacks in the house and at the "main box" there seems to be 3 lines with a security system line... they all have wires feeding into 3 "pigtail" connectors.

    One of them has blue lines in it and the other like red/... I can't seem to make any sense of it.

    If it helps I am using a cable company for phone service I have a main line and a second fax line, however, the second fax line was added by the cable company through the modem... there was not a second line brought from the street to the house.

    Can't I just buy phone line attach to jack and bring it to box and just pigtail it to one of those lines?

    If it has blue, then white/blue and blue/white is first pair(line 1). White/blue connects to green on jack and the blue with white goes to red. Each line needs 2 conductors.
    Line 2 is orange pair(white/orange and orange white).
    3rd pair green, 4th pair is brown.
    A pair of wires on terminals is usually a line. If you see wires connected, and not on terminals, may be part of alarm wiring.
    If you connect wires outside wrong, it may compromise your Alarm System(May not Dial out if that phone is "Off Hook").
    To test, you would need to momentarily unplug Line from 31X Jack(at alarm panel), then plug a network cable(8 conductor) into jack, don't plug anything in the other end, that should disable the new jack.
    Take pictures or notes to allow restoration if needed.
    A good Alarm guy would be helpful. Many Electricians don't wire Line seizure correctly. Good Luck
    Do not leave Alarm System disconnected too long, may indicate trouble on Keypad, or send trouble signal wirelessly.
