Note: Usually, three-way switches in the U.S. are rated at 120 volts. In Europe and South America, this is different. Make sure your switches are properly rated.

When two light switches are involved, special switches (usually known as "three-way" switches) are required. The name "Three-Way" seems to be a misnomer.

The switches have three wire connections. One of the connections is labeled or color-coded as being "unique. On one switch, the "unique" connection is connected to the Line voltage. A pair of wires is connected between the other two connections of each switch. On the second switch, the "unique" connection is connected to the load. The other side of the load is connected to the neutral.

The switching action moves current from the unique connection to one of the other connections. When the switch is thrown, current moves to the second connection.
