    Transformers work by coupling the magnetic fields of two electrical coils. Adding a ferrous material confines the vast majority of the magnetic flux to the core, thus greatly increasing the coupling efficiency and reducing losses.

    Silicon steel is a ferrous magnetic material in the transformer laminations. Silicon steel is used to maintain minimum magnetic losses in the transformer.
