White thing sticking out of dog's arm
My dog has a tiny white thing sticking out of the outer part of his arm by his elbow. It doesn't hurt him as far as I can tell, and we aren't taking him to the vet until later this month for shots so I was wondering if anyone had any insight? I don't think it's a bone because it's kind of soft. His arm doesn't have any deformities and he walks and runs and plays just fine. I'll try to post a picture later just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before? Thanks

I'm curious, is this a puppy? How long ago did you notice it? Has it changed over time?

No he's 5 yrs old. Will be 6 next may. My husband and I first noticed it about 2 months ago but I didn't worry too much because it didn't seem to be causing him pain and eventually it just slipped my mind. It hasn't really changed except that the texture of it is just a bit more dry than it was before. I can't really see the root because he has short hair, but it's still in the way.

I have never heard of anything like this. Did he have a cut or anything? This does not sound normal. I would never have left this so long. Just because it doesn't hurt him, doesn't mean it is not something that could be potentially serious. I don't mean to get on your case here, but how could you let something like this slip your mind? It could be something serious, under the skin that has spread!

Maybe it's just me, but I would have been calling the vet as soon as I saw something like this. When it's not normal, and is coming out from under the skin, it could be a whole array of things. I would call your vet first thing Monday morning, and explain what this is. Your dog is counting on you to make sure he's healthy, and it could be something that if left longer, could also cost you a fortune in vet bills! I wouldn't wait to talk to someone until his next appt.

No, he didn't have a cut. I would have gone to the vet if I had the money to do so. My dog is the world to me. His health IS important to me. Vets do not come cheap. Especially where I am. I took him to the vet about 5 months ago for a runny eye that I thought was an infection. So don't imply that I don't care about my dog.

I in no way was implying that you didn't care about your dog at all! I think I know better than most how expensive vets are. My dog has cost me over $3000 this yr. alone! The last time, just last month, I took her in for an emergency. It was after hrs. and it cost me $200 dollars just to put my hand on their doorknob, and by the time I walked out, my bill was near $400. I am on disability right now because of an injury, and I make VERY little money. I talked out a deal with the vet, and formed a pmt. Plan. I know it's expensive. Their prices are outrageous, but they know they can charge them, because we love our family members.

All I was saying was, call the vet. Ask them what this could possibly be, and see if they think it's something that needs immediate attention, and go from there.

I know what you mean about expense. My family goes without extras when my dogs need medical assistance. They are part of your family so please take that into consideration.

I am the last person who would tell you that you don't love your dogs but the above were correct. A little problem now can be a big problem later.

I completely understand both points. My family goes without extras (period) on a regular basis. I did call a vet before I even posted this. All the vets care about is money. They want me to bring him in for evaulation but none of them seem to be too worried. To walk in the door at any vet within a one hour radius of me it will cost no less than 80 bucks so my husband and I will knock out two birds with one stone when we take him for his yearly shots in about a week. He is a part of my family and my only child, so I do care about him. I wasn't getting on her case earlier, I was just stressing my point. Thank you both for your input though. I do agree that it could be a big problem. But at the moment I can only do so much.

Mammavztwo, you don't have a reddie, you have no rep at all so far. Just fyi.

You have given a lot of unwarranted reddies but haven't received any.

What vet did you go to? The vet to the stars in Hollywood? Seriously, a vet doesn't charge $700 to tell you there is nothing wrong with your dog. There had to be more to it than that. And why are you telling someone that you got a reddie? That is entirely untrue! We can see how many you've got, and you have gotten none!

Mamavztwo, do you want sympathy because your pet had to go to the vet and it was an expensive trip?

Sorry, that's part of having pets, part of the responsibility, if you can't afford it, then you shouldn't have pets, you definitely shouldn't be breeding them if you can't even afford x-rays and such. Trust me, it will cost a lot more than $700 to properly breed your dog.

Some vets do charge a large amount of money for just a few tests that turn out to be nothing. If I were you I'd shop around for a new vet, this one seems to only be in it for the money.

    Sadly I don't, I live in Canada.

As for Starbuck being mean, I don't think so. Starbuck is one of the nicest people I know and yes, I do know her personally. She cares about dogs, has started a foundation to help cover neutering and spaying for those people who can't afford to pay for it on their own. She volunteers at the SPCA and has a rescue dog of her own. She's on a fixed income but would sell her house, car and liver if her dog had to go to the vet. She's had a exorbinant amount of vet bills this year but she's never shirked her responsibility to her dog. She's done without a lot of things just so that her dog can get the treatment that she needs.

I have 3 dogs of my own so I know how expensive they can get, but that's what I agreed to when I brought them into our lives. Is the cost annoying? Yes, and vets don't seem to care about the animals, only the fee, but there's nothing we can do about that.

If you animal needs help they can only get it from you, their owner. It would be nice if their care was covered or less expensive but that's something to look into and consider before purchasing a pet, not after.

Maybe the rules to this site should tell people that are signing up that they should know how to properly distinguish their tone when typing before signing up for this site.
I realise that you do not understand why my reply was framed in that manner. Jaylasmommy, this is your first post on this site. You haven't read some of the other posts. Mamavztwo, you asked your first question on this site, and right off the bat, when someone said something you didn't like, you went on a "reddie" spree. We tried our best to explain to you, and asked you to read the rules and regs. because you were using "disagrees" incorrectly! You ignored this, and were rude to us!

Many of us have been on this site for a long time, and we are here to help people in our free time, with no compensation. When someone joins, and immediately starts tarnishing anothers reputation, we do get a little upset! We have put a lot of work into this! We have talked people out of committing suicide... we have helped people go through the death of a loved one... we have gone through terminal illnesses of the people we have come to know and love as our family.

When we get sidetracked by a newcomer that gets angry with us, it takes away from someone that may really need our help. This is an advice site, and one of the best ones out there. You have a responsibility to read the rules and regs. We are a tight knit family here! We welcome all newcomers. What we don't like, and will not tolerate, is when someone doesn't understand the rules, and figures they can do or say say whatever they want, to our valued members, and try and tarnish their rep by giving a "disagree" just because you don't like the advice given. Not everyone wants to hear the truth, but this is not what "reddies" are intended for. Once again, a "reddie" is for factually incorrect information, advice that is detrimental to the OP, name calling, and so on. (see rules)

So when someone signs up, and on their very first question, tries to tell us that we should put friendship aside. Well to me that, is like someone I don't know, walking in my door in the middle of my family dinner, and pulling up a chair, and telling us what to do. I take a little bit of offense to that. I will not hold it against you, but don't just walk in the door and tell one of our long time members what to do please.

Yes, sometimes it doesn't come across well in type, and there is nothing that we can do about that. That is why it's important to know how this site works, and try your best to follow the rules.

In case you see this post as angry, I'm actually not angry at all. I'm just trying to explain how it works around here, so the new people to the site know. This is not our first rodeo! :)

I apologize if you thought that I was rude for saying what I had said before, I was just trying to point out another persons point of view, which where altenweg is your friend, she may have percieved your tone the way that you had intended, but where as I do not know you, could have mistaken it very easily. I think that it is great that everyone on here helps others for free and I think that as long as everyone can come to an understanding, than everyone can be friends. So here is some advice to all...Please read all of the rules before submitting threads on this site, and be sure that you are aware of the tone that you are using. If you are in doubt as to whether someone will take something the wrong way, note that you don't mean it in any way that is offensive, or just don't say it at all.
Jaylasmommy! With all due respect, who are you to join this site today, and on your second post, give "us" (aimed at me which is quite clear) advice on how to use the rules and regs. and how to give advice? I am quite aware of the rules and regs, thank you. I have a few more than 2 posts, if you care to take a look. You may be Jayla's mommy, but you aren't mine, and you don't need to be condescending in your tone, which does come across quite clear. I don't take very kindly to someone who is a newcomer, telling us how we should give our advice, and govern how we answer questions. You were not even here yet to see exactly what happened in the order of things, and it's quite apparent you don't understand how it all unfolded. I myself believe that to be quite arrogant, but that is just my "opinion!" Maybe when you've been here and answered a couple thousand, you will understand.

    Oi jaylasmommy3

Why don't you get off your high horse, and get back down to the real world you prat.

You come on here and you vomit pathetic information.
Not only that you attack wel respected members that have aided so many people.

You really make me laugh. And yeah you can give me a reddie because this is so worth what I'm about to say.

Why don't you take your Contemptable attitude, and learn to just sit back in a corner.. and read and learn how things are done here.

Before you go off on one. And make yourself sound well.. infantile.

Yeah the rules. I have not been one to follow but at least when I give advice.
People take it. When or other members see yours.

All we see is a little person trying to sound big.

Oh yeah and my advice to you little one
Don't play with the big dogs

This is getting just plain ridiculous! What sense does it make to sweat over what some random stranger on an online help forum says? If it really does bother you that much find a different forum! Its as easy as that. All that has been accomplished with this is that you have made us loose sight of what this thread is really about, babygirl and her dog.
