    Urgent- Possible Concussion
My dog is a 3 1/2 yrs old pomeranian poodle mix.

I recently began crating my dog when I leave. When I come home, he is very excited and jumpy.

Today, I open his cage- he jumps up about 3 feet in the air and tries to twist around in the air... ends up falling right on his right side, hitting his whole body and his head into the hard wood floor...

He got up and was all hunched over, staring scared at the spot on the floor where he fell. I was worried he may have dislocated something, so I tried to get him to walk. He seemed sore at first, holding himself stiffly, but was able to sit, lie down, and then eventually walk as usual. I felt his legs, joints, back... everything seems as usual, no differences from one side of his body to the other...

If that were all, I wouldn't be concerned... but about a minute or two after he fell, he threw up. I don't know if it was nerves, or a possible concussion... he stood there heaving for a while, threw up quite a bit... and then was walking as though he was weak and disoriented... almost walked into the leg of the coffee table in the living room.

I had him lie down and just tried to calm him down... and then about 10 min later, he was up and looking for something to eat (now is right around when I'd be feeding him his 2nd meal of the day).

He seems pretty much like himself right now, but I'm worried. I debated the er clinic, but really can't afford it right now... plus, if it's a concussion, they'll probably just charge me $200 to confirm that and tell me to keep an eye on him, right?

Just wanted some input on what could be wrong with him (if he could have vomitted from a concussion? Maybe it was just nerves from being scared and hurt?) and what I should do/watch for and for how long?

    Thanks in advance.

One time my mom had a pom that thought it was just like the big dogs. He would bark his @$$ off @ them. The big dogs would just sit there looking down at them with a smirk on their face like "YEAH RIGHT!" One day he was up close and personal with one & the dog decides to RUFF back at him and nudge him slightly with his nose. My mom rushed him to the vet about an hour away. I kept telling my mom he is just in shock. By the time we got him on the table and the vet came in he was no longer dazed. The vet just said keep an eye on him and if he exhibits any unusual behavior or worries bring him back.

I don't know and can't say if he has anything that needs to be checked by the vet on but that was
My experience and I am NO expert.

One thing is keep checking everything, things you wouldn't even think of otherwise. Like change in pupils, hearing, swelling, weakness, following commands, eating habits, general habits, etc...

Thanks- I agree with you. I'm sure that the vet charged your mom a ridiculous amount of money to say that her dog would be fine, and to keep an eye on her, right? Lol Not that all vets are like that, but I know that mine is (which is why I'm looking for a new one for his next visit!)

I called the vet (not his usual, a different office), and it doesn't seem like they felt he needed to come in right away, only if he can't keep food down, has blood in his urine, or is acting strangely.

He seems like himself again, so I think I'm just going to keep any eye on him. The only way the vet would be able to tell if anything was wrong would be through x-rays, according to the woman I spoke w/on the phone... so that's $55 office visit, plus $250 for x-rays, when he seems fine... not that I'm putting a price on his health, but... if I fell and felt weird for a little bit, but then felt better, I wouldn't rush to the doctor... I'd wait and see.

Plus, I was thinking... this probably isn't the first time he's ever done this. On Christmas Eve/Day he was having seizures, walking funny, really sleepy, not eating well... and I can't help but wonder if maybe he did the same thing then too... we thought it was low blood sugar, which it may have been... but seeing how he acted today, there were definite similarities. Plus, we've only had him for about 5 months... and he's jumped like this since the day we picked him up... so I really don't think that it's never happened before till just now, just that I never actually SAW it happen till today.

I will be back if there are updates or I have any more questions. If anyone has any other advice, input, or suggestions, please post them- I will be checking back periodically.

    Thanks!
