Sudden excessive saliva and hacking from my chi-pug.
In the last two weeks my dog has suddenly started drooling uncontrollably. He is also starting to hack/cough a bit. Today he is refusing to go poop. We've taken him to the vet, and blood work came back OK, they cleaned his teeth, and he is STILL having the problem of the drool. This is such a sudden change we can't help but think something is wrong with him. We also can't afford to keep going back to the vet. Can anyone help me?

I think you either need to go back to the vet or get a second opinion. Can he swallow? The Pug mix makes me wonder whether it is related to all the problems the short-nosed breeds have with their upper airway. Laryngeal paralysis, an overly long soft palate, something of that nature. This doesn't sound like anything you can help at home, and it may even take a specialist to diagnose it. I know that's not the answer you were hoping for, but this sounds complicated.

Saliva [ 3 Answers ]

This is an old problem and one I forgot to ask my dentist about just recently: A few years ago my old dentist said I had higher levels of calculus (calcium?) in my saliva than usual. I have no probs with my teeth at all, I'm lucky, no fillings, no more tartar than usual, but lots of calculus. I...
