    Puppy diarrhea
My 11 week old boxer mix has had horrible diarrhea for almost 2 weeks... I don't know why or what's going on with him at first his stools were fine then I took him to the vet for his shots and ever since I brought him home his diarrhea has been out of control. What should I do? Is he okay?

Some dogs do have reactions to their vaccines, but a puppy with diarrhea for two weeks is cause for concern. It could be something simple like food, to something more serious like parasites or disease. Please take you puppy back to your vet. Please make sure he has as much access to fresh water as possible.

If you had terrible diarrhea for 2 weeks would you see a Physician?

If the answer is yes, call your Vet.

I had problems with my puppy having the runs when he was little also. As long as it isn't dark, tarry, or with lots of mucus it should be okay.

One thing I noticed with my puppy was rawhide chews, I know they are made for dogs right? But seriously the are not the best for them because the swell up in the intestine and cause some serious irritation, diaherra, and tummy aches. It could be that your young pup has had a hay day chewing on things, cotton from his new bedding or stuffed toy you just got him. It could also be that he is sensitive to his food, this happened to my pup, and his vet put him on a special intestinal low-residue food. If you are allowing your pup to chew on rawhide sticks or bones I would take those away first and see if the diaherra stops if not I would express your concerns to your vet he might have an infection and need some antibiotics. To calm his tummy immediately give him a tablespoon of pepto bismol and feed him boiled hamburger and cottage cheese for a week, plain yogurt also helps three times a day as normal about a cup each time.

I know that many people agree that pepto is safe for dogs, but there has been no evidence that it's helpful, and there is a risk, especially since this puppy is 11 weeks old and there's no way to know whether he will have an allergic reaction to Pepto.

Here's a link about Pepto and pets to help make a more informed decision on whether you want to administer this to your puppy.

    Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol®, Kaopectate®)

The most important thing right now is to get to the vet. It's not normal for a puppy to have diarrhea for 2 weeks. Like others have mentioned, it could be food allergies, or it could be something serious, so it's time to get it checked.

In the meantime, make sure puppy is drinking, always have water available. If you notice he's not drinking or seems lethargic, pedialyte will help keep him hydrated until you can get him to the vet.

The vet really is your only option.

Out of greenies but, yes, agree with Alty - my Vet warned me against giving my dog Pepto.

    This advice could be dangerous.
