    Pet skin care
Hi all, my pet Daschund has a skin problem which leaves him scratching nibbling and licking small sores on his underside. Anyone know what to do.

Wait for "labman" to sign on... he's GREAT with this! You might want to repost under Home and Gardens/Pets and Animals

If you are feeding a decent chow and little else, brushing regularly, and bathe the dog seldom if ever, and it still has skin or coat problems, see the vet. Many skin and coat problem are caused by washing all the natural oils away and by a residue of shampoo left behind. When you do bathe the dog, rinse, rinse, rinse the last of the shampoo away.

Skin problems are no fun. How long have the sores been there? Has he had fleas or been bitten by insects? Follow labmans advice for a while and like he said, if he still has problems, go to your vet. My puppy is currently on antibiotics and prednisone for an allergic reaction he had to fleas. Pain in the butt. He also had an allergic reaction to ant bites. Both times he had sores that got 10X worse with all the munching he did. The sores and irritation came from his allergies but as it turns out he caused the infection from all the messing he did with it. If simple grooming fixes the problem, all the better:) Stop him from munching and licking as much as possible because that will only make the sores worse.

Labman is correct with his statements above. My mini was just diagnosed with seasonal allergies. He bites at his feet and tail for about 10 minutes after a long walk and sneezes. It is actually similar to human allergies. The vet was able to give him something to stop the itching.
