    Puppy itching all the time!
    Hello
I have a 4 month old German Sheperd pup who has been itchy since we got her at 6 weeks old.
She's up to date on shots, had vet check up and he suggested giving her benadryl. We do that but she still itches and bites at herself all the time. Vet didn't find any evidence of fleas She does have "flakes" so he told us to not bathe her. It's been a month and no relief!

If she has dry skin there are a few things you can try.

First is adding essential oils to your dogs diet.
I feed a tin of sardines in oil a couple of times a week. A cheaper alternative is giving a table spoon of vegetable oil (mixed through food).
But the best option (thanks Bella) is fish oil capsules. They can be expensive but work the best.

You can also buy medicated shampoos. I have a Chinese Crested (hairless dog) and they are prone to skin problems so I bathe him in Triocil or Malaseb when I notice him starting to itch.

Are you opening up the fish oil capsules and pouring on food or feeding them whole? and 1 a day?

Shepards also needs outdoor air, a lot of it.
And indoor air temps that are not cranked up really warm.
And humidity if you are in a cold climate right now.
K9 Shepards are always in a car with a window down or a barrier front/back so that the car heat doesn't destroy their sense of smell.
Benadryl, if it works, might give a clue about allergies - to dust, carpeting, his bed, your bed, anything.
I trust that his diet is a GOOD brand of fresh dry kibble (so any fats aren't rancid) with a little canned food or fresh meat.
Oil is definitely good. Make sure it isn't some cheap processed type. The sardines have their own fish oils.

JD, I haven't used fish oil capsules I just know Bella highly recommends them and a few other top breeders use them as well.

Bella?? How do you give them? Straight down the food chute or over food?

Since no one has mentioned this could it be allergies? My dog has them and has to have a special shampoo twice a week and is only allowed a dog food that is fish only. He can not have anything else including no dog bones, pigs ears etc. Also he has to wear dog shirts in the summer times to help keep grass etc off his skin..
I am no expert on diagnosing allergies but would suggest a talk with your vet if nothing else seems to work and your dog is still itching. I am sure others will know more about dog allergies and correct me if I am wrong in suggesting this.

Puppy itching [ 3 Answers ]

We just got a new bulldog and she is itching like crazy. Could it be the food? She has had it before. She doesn't seem to have flees, loves to go in the wood chips in the garden. Doesn't have red ears so I don't think it is ear mites. Any thoughts on what it could be?
