Potty training an adult male daschund
I have a 1 year old male mini doxie. We have had him since he was 7 weeks old. We worked with him on potty training when we first got him. He did not do so well during the winter, preferring to stay on the deck and hold it until he came inside and then go. When the weather changed, he seems to be going outside and doing pretty well with his potty training. In the last month (we have had more rain) he has been constantly going inside. He will even leave the deck and still not go outside.
We really do not want to get rid of him as we enjoy the dog and love having him around. But, we need a way to make sure that he is going outside or at the very least on a puppy pad and on in our house.
Our dog is not fixed, as we have thought about breeding, but given the problems we are having with potty training, that does not seem like it will be an option.
Any tips that can be given for potty training would be helpful.
    Thanks

What you may need to do is walk him around when you take him out. I have become very proficient at getting dogs to eliminate before I take them in public places. The secret is to walk, walk, walk. They can't walk and hold it at the same time. Then, when nature has its way, lavish praise on him. There is some material on learning to read when he needs to go out, to better time things in choosing when to take him out in the sticky at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251802
Days he follows his regular routine, you may even be able to pick up a pattern. Keeping a coat where you can grab it on the way out the door helps too.

If he were my dog I would
    1. Read labmans stickey .
    2. Get him neutered. He may start marking your house, if not already.
    3. Buy him a coat or sweater, and a raincoat, petsmart, Walmart and Target sells them you would be surprised at how much they help the little dog's without very much hair.
    4. I would go out with him and walk and walk if necessary until he could no longer hold it. Then walk him a bit farther. As labman has stated. I had a dog that I would sometimes walk for 2 hours before he would go poo, as labman said I made the mistake of letting him know that pooing meant going home.

I agree with Labman. I have a male doxie as well and he HATES the colder weather. I have to walk and walk before he will go. Zeus will get to the edge of the covered part of my deck and let loose with some trying to fool me into thinking he was finished and didn't need to be walked in the rain. I would then bring him inside and within seconds he would be standing in a puddle. Now I know it takes walking and walking and multiple potty stops before all is safe and sound. Personally I think he makes it longer than it has to be just so I have to get really wet too. :)
