How to house train a 2 year old Shih Tzu
I just received a dog from a friend who did not walk the dog and let her pee and poop all over her house. I thought that just walking her twice a day would solve the potty problem but I've found that right after we have walked her she will poop in the house. We have limited her diet to dog food once a day, because she was eating table food at her old house. How can I potty train her after two years of bad habits? She is an adorable dog, but we are losing patience with all the mess.

How do you walk her, and for how long? Do you just let her wander, and sniff around, hoping she will poop and pee? Or do you go on a fast paced walk where moving forward is her only option. Unless she knows that you are her new pack leader, and establish the rules, it will be hard to housebreak her. The walks, and how you do them are important. It doesn't matter that she's two at all. She could be 6 or 10, age doesn't matter, they can still be trained. Dogs live in the moment, unlike us!

Here's what I will suggest, every time you catch her in the act have a pepsi bottle full of rocks, and shake it hopefully this will catch her attention and she will stop and when she does you can pick her up and put her outside(it is best if you have a set spot and always bring her there.) Remember you have to be consistent, after a while she will catch on and think oh no I can't pee inside only in my spot outside.

A walk is a time of travel going from one place to another, following you. After the walk allow the dog some time outside to sniff and do the thing. Also feeding twice a day is better but make a schedule usually 10 to 15 min. after eating is a good time to go out and potty. If you are having a problem with #1 too limit water intake not to the point of the dog being thirsty all the time just don't leave the water down all day with out the chance to pee.
