Our house smells like a doghouse. We have a large bulldog in our home. He sheds a lot. We have had the carpet professionally steam cleaned and the house still smells like our dog. It's in the air. I was thinking maybe it is in the duct work. My question is would getting our duct work cleaned get rid if this smell?

It is a very very strong smell and I have cleaned everything multiple times trying to get rid of the smell and nothing seems to work, that's why I think it's in air. It's in every room.

Our house was brand new when we moved in if that helps. We've lived here for five years and had our dog for four years. The smell has gotten worse over the years. We are clean people and this is really embarrassing for us and we are at our wits end.

Just to make sure you understand, this is not a potty issue, he goes outside and thankfully we've never had a problem with him doing anything inside.

Please someone answer this, any ideas are appreciated.

Have you tried arm & hammer furnace filters? They're supposed to help with odors.

Does the dog smell too or just the house? I'd try bathing him often and replacing the carpet.

Since he is a Bulldog, I suspect the odor may be due to him having a yeast infection on his skin. Speak to your vet about products to control the condition on his body.
I'm not sure what is available for household use, but try to speak to a professional cleaning service or even a real estate agent about what they use for fungal (mold, etc.) odors.

We've tried all carpet fresheners, and even the air filter things that you put in your return vent, those do not work.
This seems to be in the air, I mean, it is in the carpet as well, but I think for the most part it is in the air. That's why I thought the duct cleaning would help. Guess I'm wrong.
Yes the dog smells too, not horrible, just like a regular dog. We give him baths, he loves those.
Why do you say because he is a bulldog that he has a yeast infection. I got to go Google that, lol.

Bicarbonate of soda works wonders for smell on carpets, as does soda water... it eliminates the odors without adding "fruity" scents from those yukky sprays you get.
Sorry my brain isn't working so I can't remember who said it but I agree with the possibility of a yeast type infection, bulldogs have a lot of folds on their skin which if not washed often can result in rashes and infections.

Honey, I smell your pain. Your problem describes our problem in every way. We have 3 dogs, I read some of the other suggestions that other people have posted and I plan on getting our ducts cleaned, in addition to that we have decided to get them a dog house and let them live outside. I had family that came over recently and the first thing they smelled wasn't the food, it was the dogs odor. I was so embarrassed, because the visitors simply said it smells like a dog kennel in here. Our house is just a few years old as well. We have also decided to replace the carpet in 4 room and have the furniture replaced in 2 of them. Its going to cost about $10,000.00 by the time it is all said and done. But had my hubby listened to me when I suggested that they live outside to begin with, we'd have $10,000.00 to save. But the odor is beyond ridiculous. My sister suggested that I buy those Wallflowers from Bath and Body, which I just came back from the mall and have plugged them. They smell great. It helps to hide the odor. But the problem has to fixed permanently, that why the dogs must go outside. My house didn't smell this bad when my kids were in pampers.
