Need to find a boxer rescue
Went to buy Ice and found a boxer. She is beautiful and so sweet. Poor thing is so skinny every rib shows and so do most of her back bones and her hip bones. Wow I wish I could keep her. My kids love her so much. I just can't bring myself to send her to the Spca. I am looking for a Boxer rescue group in OH, Ky or Indiana. If anyone knows of any. It is after midnight here and I have left a message for the 1 that I found for Ohio, but I feel the more I can call the better chance she will have.

bushg, unfortunately, I am a bit pressed for time this morning to research this for you through my connections. I will try to spend some time later if you don't mind holding onto her for a day or so, and get back to you. In the meantime there are a number of things you can do. If you believe she is a full blooded Boxer, you might want to consider bringing her to your vet and seeing if she is microchipped. There is always the possibility that she managed to slip out of the house and the owners have been searching for her. That is usually the first thing that I do. I also do an internet and newspaper search, in the areas around me. You should be able to pull up all the newspapers online. There are a number of websites that are specifically geared toward Lost & Found of pets. Type in "lost boxer, female, OH" and see what pops up. Another thing I do is to call all the vets in the area and ask if any of their clients are missing a female boxer.

The only Boxer rescue that I am aware of in your area is the one that I am sure you found. Go to Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. and do a general search of all the rescues in each state in your region. If there aren't other boxer rescues, you might find other rescues that aren't specifically boxer rescuers but that take all dogs, are no-kill, and might be willing to take her.

You can also contact ALL the Boxer rescues that you find throughout the U.S. and explain the situation. You never know who their people know, and someone at one of those might have a friend in your area that they work with.

In addition, if you are interested in fostering her and placing her yourself to make sure that she is going to a good home, you can always place a lost & found ad in your local newspaper for a week. I don't know what the laws are in your area, but usually, it is a 7 to 10 day period of advertising that is required prior to allowing the dog to be adopted out. After that time, you can run an ad in the paper for someone to adopt her. If this is something that you want to do, the best way to find a good home for her is to charge an adoption fee. It will help you weed out the irresponsibles and allow you to recover the costs of a vet visit/spay. Definitely spay her, if she isn't already (that is if you cannot find the owners and choose to handle the adoption yourself) prior to adopting her out. Do a home check to make sure they have the right environment for the dog and watch the interaction between the people & the dog, very carefully. Get the name of the vet they use and call the vet to make sure they have vetted their animals in the past. You can create a contract that will ensure you are legally allowed to follow up on the welfare of the dog with the vet and the new owner, and will allow you to take the dog back if she isn't being properly cared for.

    I hope this helps.

Hi ruby thanks. For answering my post. Well the SPCA and the police both know where she is and I found out the owners names, and which house they live in. The neighbor came out and told me that the people left her outside, even in the winter chained up, and let her go hungry. I told her to tell her neighbors if They wanted their dog back then they need to go to the police station or SPCA to get it back from me. She did say that she heard them calling her name last night, but no one had put up any signs today. They were not home so I called the police and SPCA and told them that I was keeping her unless they came to my house with the police or the SPCA. I told them where I found her and what kind of shape she was in and that she had no collar on. The man at the store can back me up as he saw her to. Also the house next to the store is willing to back me up. I gave them my address and phone numbers and the people know I have their dog and I want their a$$ held responsible for the shape she is in. They must not want her because they have not shown up as of yet. I am going to wait and see what happens. I have gotten in touch with a rescue group and they are advising me on how to take care of her. I also have had this rescue checked out to make sure that they are legit. The closest one I found was 125 miles from me. If these people or the SPCA do not show then they are going to take her. Problem is I don't know how long to wait for a response. I am going to take her to the vet tomorrow to let them check her out, Also I have taken pictures of her ears and her bony condition. I wonder how much trouble I can get in for withholding this dog if these people pursue it.

Bushg, I don't know what the laws are in Ohio with regard to what can happen to you. I would imagine since the police & ASPCA are aware of the situation, and that you are willing to give the dog back to these people only when they show up with a legal escort, you aren't doing anything that would be considered illegal. You can always state that since you found out the dog was just recently "lost" and in such terrible condition, you were fearful of the kind of people they were and didn't want them coming to your home without the authorities present.

These are other things that come to my mind to CYA:
    1. Get the names of the police officers & ASPCA members that you contacted. Ask them what the law is regarding how long you need to wait for the dog to be claimed before she can be offered up for adoption. Also ask whoever is responsible for enforcing the animal cruelty laws, what you need to do to help build a case to ensure these people are charged.
    2. You have the pictures, make sure they are dated. It is important to back up the date that you found her and the condition she was in.
    3. Get the vet to do a complete write up of the dog's condition. This is extremely important to building a neglect case against these people.

Here are some links to all the rescues in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, along with one to all the Boxer rescues across the U.S. Review them when you have an opportunity. You don't necessarily need to stick with a Boxer rescue if it is too far away. When you look through them, there are rescues, besides the ASPCA, that will take in all sizes of dogs. One that seemed promising, but I don't know how far away it is from you is the Purebred Rescue Organization of Ohio, Inc.

Thanks ruby you are so detailed. I have a friend that is a notary. I can write something up and have the store owner and the 1 neighbor that saw me get the dog sign it in her presence. That should be proof enough.

I just had a lady that has 2 boxers come and look at her. She said she is 15 to 20 pounds under weight , is no more than 1 year old and has had babies, but her milk has dried up. She also said she is a very smart and friendly dog. <---That I already knew:)

What a mess! That poor thing. Well, that is one additional person that can back up the neglect case. Keep plugging away. Good luck at the vet's office.

Boxer rescue found, did not work out. Also the lady that gave me the peoples name for the owners was mistaken there are no people on that street by that name. I checked several different sources and could not come up with any name like theirs from anyone. Thanks for all of your boxer links.
