    Dog's Throat Infection
Our Great Pyrenees has been diagnosed with a throat infection from either a small piece of something in her throat or a bacterial infection. She has received 3 antibiotic shots in the last 4 days as well as the oral antibiotics we are giving her 2 times daily. She has not eaten in 2 days, but is drinking. Her throat is swollen and the swelling is gravitating up to the right jaw. She is also running a fever. We are to call the vet back tomorrow if she is no better. Any advice until then? Or has anyone ever had this problem? Thanks so much!

Did she spend the night in a boarding facility in the last few days,or has she been exposed to other dogs that she usually is not around? Her throat probably is too sore to swallow. You might try a can of prescription AD which is very mild but most animals love it.We have gotten animals that were on the verge of starvation to eat this stuff.Hopefully she will begin to show improvement, but if it is a infection like Kennel cough,it is a pain in the butt to cure.Sometimes switching antibiotics may boost the body's ability to knock out a resistant infection.Good luck.

She is an outside dog who roams our farm as she pleases, gnawing on bones and sticks.. much to our dismay! Getting the antibiotic capsule down her sore throat has been a chore to say the least, but she is so gentle, even though she is so sick. What is "a can of prescription AD"? I have tried mashed potatoes, cream of chicken soup, milk and eggs, etc. I have even tried feeding her with my fingers. We have her in the garage now and we just noticed blood coming from her mouth/jaw. The vet said if this happened it is a good sign as the abscess has ruptured. Praise the Lord, I hope she is turning the corner. I just want to do everything I can for her. Thanks for your advice and any more you could offer:)

If you are feeding a dry chow, you might try softening it up with water or even chicken broth. You could also try the peanut butter in the Kong trick. She might be able to swallow the small amount she could lick out.

Get back with the vet in the morning. I hope he will find a treatment she will respond to faster. Most dogs will be OK even if they miss a few days not eating. Worry instead about clearing up the problem.

You posted while I was answering. Keeping dogs from chewing sticks when they are outside is tough. At least most of the sticks they find are either too green or too rotten to splinter. Scraps of lumber is what is bad. Or for that matter, wooden structures. Our one window sill is missing a corner.
