Dog started pooping in cage after 1 month
Hi I am new to this dog trianing thing. We bought a pug 5 weeks ago. He is 4 months old. The first month was perfect... no pee or poop ever in the crate. We this week he suddenly started to pee and poop in crate. The only thing I changed was his bed because he was eating the fur off the bed. The first day the new bed was there he peeded 2 times. We always take him out at least every 2 hours and he had just gone out 15 minutes prior. Now it has turned into poop... no signs no movement... no cry.. nothing just wakes up and poops?? Can anyone give me an idea on why he would have such a sudden change in his bathroom habits? Thanks a lot

Re: dog started pooping in cage after 1 month
There is no consensus among experts on what is happening. Some deny such things even happen. The first step is to get him a checkup. Unless the stools are really loose, it is unlikely that is a physical problem, but impossible to train out if it is. My guess is that he is protesting the loss of his fur bed. And yes, taking it away was a good idea. Many dogs die from problems with things they chew up.

Take away all his bedding. Dogs do fine on a bare crate floor. You can even put in a wire rack to reduce the mess he makes of himself. They are available with the crates, but a piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper. Leave him some safe chew toys, Nylabones or Kongs. He finds this very unpleasant just as you do. Stand your ground, and you can outlast him. Give in now. And 15 pounds of dog will be master of your house for the next 10-20 years. Start obedience training if you haven't already. He may be a little young for formal classes.
Having a good pack structure reduces such problems. The dogs see all the
People and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in
The pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
Outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by
Reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
Or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
A treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/. At 4 months, keep the sessions short, no more than 5-10 minutes.
