Dog aggression towards other new dog addition
I just adopted a 4-year-old basset/beagle mix male and I already have a 5-year-old dachshund male. Whenever I try to get them together, the dachshund goes crazy and snaps, growls, bites, and barks and the other dog. What should I do? I really need a way for this to stop very soon. Thanks

You just can't throw them together as one or both will try to be alpha dog. Stopping very soon may be difficult. Perhaps a neutral place -a dog park or outside the house would be a good place to start introducing.

Think about it. Your husband comes home from work with a woman you've never seen before. "Hi, honey," he says to you. "This is Susie and she's going to live here now. What time is dinner?"

Like ma0641 said, you're going to have to start over and introduce them to each other slowly. Is there a room the new dog can live in for a while and then give them chaperoned opportunities to sniff each other?

    Are both dogs fixed?

    How were they initially introduced?

Do the have separate food dishes and water dishes, in separate areas of the house? What about toys?

Basically this new dog is encroaching on the old dogs territory. In the wild they'd fight, and whoever won would get the territory.

He's making sure that the new dog knows that he's the top dog in the house. In other words, he thinks he's the leader of the pack. That's a problem. You need to be the leader, and you need to make him understand that what you say goes. That means that if you bring a new dog into your pack, he has to accept it.

    Easier said than done.

I would highly recommend working with an animal behaviorist. They can be pricey, but that would be your best option.

    Good luck.
