    Dachshund puppy with Parvo
:( :( :( my friend just bought a new miniature dachshund puppy Saturday, and found out early Wednesday morning the puppy has Parvo. She hadn't eaten since sometime early afternoon Tuesday, so at the vet they pumped her full of nutrients and all that jazz.

They gave her two options: put her on an IV to treat her for it (*$500-$700 and even then chances aren't so great :() or wait it out and see if she might start eating and drinking. They bought some canned puppy food and she nibbled at that; they've been giving her water through a syringe.

Anyone know about survival rates of Parvo in Dachshund puppies? She is 7 weeks old, not sure about the weight of her.

I don't have any numbers, but it is grim for such a young, small breed. Large adults can survive without treatment, but the little puppies lack reserves, and we lose many of them even with aggressive treatment.

You can bring a healty puppy home from the breeder, and the first time you take it out, one sniff where a sick dog eliminated in the last 6 months kills it. I am very sorry for your friend.

    :(

That's what we're trying to figure out: where the contamination occurred. She's only eliminated in their yard and their relatives, so they're working on a decontamination, but she was talking about a man that walks his dog through our neighborhood and lets it crap wherever it feels like, and doesn't pick it up. Now, she got the dog Saturday, and it seemed fascinated by that poo. But if its normal parvo where it shows in 7-10 days, it would have only been 4 when she started having funky poo. So, is it a big possibility she got it from the breeder?

You're listed as an ultra expert, if the dog passes, what might be a consolation to my friend? She had a dachshund for 15 years almost, then put it down in November, fell in love with zoey right away and her heart is breaking even after 5 days.

The longer you have been around and more posts you make, the higher the rating. Stupid and dangerous ones count the same as good ones. I feel comfortable about most of my answers.

It is possible for a whole litter to be contaminated. Parvo can even be air born. It is a nasty, horrible disease, striking puppies just as people fall in live with them, and highly fatal in the very young. Your friend should talk to the breeder, and maybe warn the people with litter mates. A good breeder does everything to protect their puppies they can, but somebody coming to look at the puppies can carry parvo in on their shoes.

    Hi,
I had a german shepard pup with parvo. We were told the survivalo rate was 50/50 with medication. It was very expensive, and it was the 80's at the time. But we somehow managed to get the fees. It was heartbreaking to see the dog so ill. My uncle used to sit every night with him , all night. After two weeks of meds, the dog pulled through. You can't imagine our joy. He lived till age 15. I would recommend the meds, and tlc. Also get pet insaurance. I never saw a man so grief stricken as my uncle, when Star the german shepard passed away.

I don't know about the breed but I do know that the vet can give the puppy a shot of antibyatic and some to take home. Just went through it last summer with my son's puppy. So maybe your friend would want to call the vet and see if that maybe an opation for her puppies case
