Christmas presents/Animals as gifts
This time of year a lot of people will give puppys, kittys and other animals as presents. Do you think this is a good idea?

If you know it is okay with the family and they would give the pet love and attention.
Like the last thing you want to do is give a pet to a kid and for the kid it is love at first sight
While the parents are contemplating the best way to get rid of it without the kid needing psych counseling as a result.
Also many adults both work and the pet is home and neglected even locked in a cage all day so there isn't much point.

When I managed the shelter, every year around Christmas people would come in wanting to adopt a puppy or kitten as a gift and I would tell them to wait, there is usually so much going on during the holidays that people often overlook the needs of a new pet. It's stressful enough on us, imagine the stress on them.Plus ,like a lot of gifts the new wears off and there you go,getting a pet should be a thought out decision and not on a whim.To me and many of you here it's a lifelong commitment.A pet should never," in my opinion," be given as a gift.

Also people don't have the time to train them properly if they are coming and going, shopping, visiting etc...

A pet is not a gift, it is to become part of a family and the people who will have to live with the pet need to decide and pick the pet out.

No, I do not think giving an animal as a gift for Christmas is a good idea. At times it is like getting that great remote controlled truck and using it for a week then tossing it in the toy bin - hardly ever to be played with again.

I think it depends on the way you word the question. If a family has been considering getting a pet, made a reasoned decision to get one, etc. I see nothing wrong with announcing it at Christmas, most likely by wrapping pet-related items as gifts. But getting the pet itself at Christmas is too much... you want to wait until life is back to its normal routine first.
Now, surprising someone with a pet for Christmas, or any other time, is just totally wrong.

Half the fun of getting a puppy or kitten is picking it out. So I suggest giving the person a stuffed animal with a coupon good for a real puppy or kitten instead of a live animal.

I remember my first dog. I got it for Christmas when I was 4. My grandparents took me to my aunt's neighor to see the boxers and I said I liked 'that one'. Christmas day my grandmother came walking up our sidewalk in the cold snow with her under her coat. I had her until I was 16.

Pets should never be given as gifts. Even if people have been "talking" about it, it's likely they aren't ready and have doubts which is why it's only talk. An animal needs to be cared for the rest of it's life and is a big commitment that too many people just don't understand and the animal ends up neglected. Training, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, owning an animal is expensive and maybe that's why there's so much discussion before a decision can be made. This is why shelters are over full with dogs and cats. Wait till after they're committed enough to go out and get the animal themselves, then for next Christmas buy them stuff for the pet.
