    7 week old Puppy
We are waiting to get a puppy from an Amish farm... he will be 7 weeks when we pick him up. They are all kept in a barn... and I am very concerned about fleas! I have had a flea infestation before... and I do not want any animal with fleas. All the pet medications seem to say to wait until they are 8 weeks old before treating. Is there anything I can do to ensure that I don't bring fleas into my house? As I have dealt with this before, I know flea collars and flea baths just don't work. Any other helpful advice?

I would call the vet and get their opinion on what to do. Also ask the vet if 7 weeks is to early to be weaned from its mom. In Ohio we have had bad experiences with amish farms mistreating their dogs. When you go pick your puppy up I hope you get a chance to look around and see what kind of conditions these dogs live in. If it isn't kosher then please make a phone call to the proper officials.

I just looked, my package of Revolution say says six weeks and older. I would talk to the vet and take something with you. I would be uncomfortable spraying the puppy with something in front of the seller, or even rolling it in a treated towel, but you don't want to take any home. You really don't even want them in the car. Maybe have a towel treated with something puppy safe in the car and wrap the puppy in it as the directions on my Ovitrol say.

Good move on your part to think ahead. It is much easier to keep fleas out of your house than to evict them. Don't take him in the house until you have rid him of fleas. The vets have the best, safest stuff.

''Also ask the vet if 7 weeks is to early to be weaned from its mom.'' Puppies should be weaned at 4 weeks. Puppies should never be remove from their mother and litter before 6 weeks, but 7 weeks is a good time to go to their new home. They are ready to explore the world and quick to accept new things. They learn fast. Wait too long, and they are slow to accept new things. Ones still in the kennel after 12 weeks may never adjust to living in a house.
