6 1/2 old silky terrier started eating her own poop.
She just started this. She only weighed 2 1/2 lb when I got her from a pet store. She was 4 mo old. Took to vet day after I got her. Was malnourished, had kennel cough, backward sneezing, respiratory problems. One type of parasite. She was put on meds for all this & critical care food for 10 days. Loved that food. Eats now but I have to add turkey or chicken to her puppy food, tried different good brands plus dry food I leave out all time. I have noticed she only eats her poop if I am on the phone or pre-occupied. Happy little dog, hyper when playing, sleeps well. Likes attention constantly. My conclusion is I have her spoiled & wants attention, most likely neglected in the pet store, neglect & not fed properly & ate poop. Beware of pet stores & 900.00 dogs. Vet bills. Bad habits. Hoping she will get over this habit.

Why are you feeding puppy food; she is 4 months old, but only part of the reason she is eating her poop. If you start feeding her a good quality dog kibble, then you won't have to add meat to it. Heated up in the microwave for a couple of minutes enhances the flavour of the kibble by the way.

If you stick around her for a while when she goes outside to do her business, and pick the poop up right away, plus a better tasting dog food, this may solve the problem. When it isn't around when she turns around to smell and eat, and it isn't there, she will forget about it.

You may have a lovely little girl there even though getting off to a rough start, yes puppies, or dogs from a pet store is not a good way to go. At times they come from puppy mills.

Good luck with your furr baby.
