5 mo old Border Collie Puppy - Distemper shot reaction
I have a 5 mo old Border Collie Puppy who just had her Distemper shot (last of initial shots) yesterday.
After about 6-8 hours later, she was completely lethargic (very obvious for a Border Collie) and in pain. I hoped that it would go away after a good night's rest but it has continued. I dropped her off at the Vet this morning at 8 and the doc said it was 'Injection Trauma'. She never had it with the previous injections and now they will probably bill me for the treatment (Injection of Benadryl plus an antihistamine).

My question is this: shouldn't the vet be responsible for this? It's not about the money, but shouldn't they treat her without a charge? I am seriously considering another vet if they DO charge me.

    What do you think?

This has happened to my dogs - it's an unexpected reaction to the shot. I think (unfortunately for you) that it was totally unexpected and the Vet should not be expected to treat it for free.

One of my GSDs was HIGHLY allergic, had no reaction to the first 2, ended up "hospitalized" for 3 days with the third. No way to know - and, yes, I paid for his treatment.

I would not change Vets based on this; I believe any other Vet also would have charged you.

I have to agree with Judy here. It's kind of like when you go in for a routine surgery and something un expected happens, you still have to pay for the treatment or prescription drugs needed after wards.

They are still providing the service, and because it is un expected and not negligence on their behalf, you should be required to pay for the services rendered. It’s a bum situation, and I do feel for you and your dog, and I hope for a speedy recovery, but vets have to pay their bills too.

The only time a vet should pay for something is when they have done something incorrectly.

Ie: Getting a dog spayed and stitches being sewn too tightly.
