We just rescued a 3 year opld dog. He did not pee in the house the first few days at home. Very loving and sweet dog, doesn't seem unhappy at all. Started peeing in the house recently and we take outside frequently, ebery few hours. We clean pee right away with carpet cleaner. What do we do?

If you accidentally pee on the toilet seat does your wife rub your nose in it and smack you? I certainly hope not!

Hitting a dog is not the answer, it's a dog, not a human, they don't understand violence.

Will he learn if you do what blindmender suggested? Yes, he'll stop peeing in your house, but not because you taught him anything, only because you've beaten him and made him afraid of peeing in the house. This is abuse, and the reason why many potentially good dogs go bad.

He's new to your home, do you know if he was housebroken before you adotped him? If he was, it could be a simple matter of showing him where you want him to do his business. Take him outside, choose a command word (for example; Make) when he goes pee or poo praise him. Go overboard with the praise, perhaps even a treat. Keep repeating this. If he was housebroken before it won't take him long to catch on, if he wasn't housebroken before, this is the way to teach him to potty outside, it just may take longer.

If you catch him in the act of doing his business in your home, grab him immediately, take him outside, give him the command word, wait until he does his business, then praise. When you get inside, clean up the mess (vinegar works well to cover the smell 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar).

Never ever hit your dog, unless you want an unstrusting, fearful, potentially violent pet. If that's what you want, then please find another home for this dog.
