Are certificates awarded by Canyon College recognized?
I am currently taking a distance learning Grief Counseling Program at Canyon College in Idaho. I have seen that this school is not accredited by CHEA. I already have B.S. and M.S. degrees from accredited universities, but want to practice in the field of Grief Counseling in Illinois. Will the Canyon College certificate be recognized? Would I be violating state law (Public Act 93-0239), which states that colleges must by legally constituted to offer degrees?

As a professional involved in non-traditional delivery of education (twenty years+), I can still be amazed how how rigid the "education box" can be.
The DOE (US) clearly states on its own website that it does not accredit institutions; furthermore, it also states, "The database does not include a number of postsecondary educational institutions and programs that elect not to seek accreditation but nevertheless may provide a quality postsecondary education."
Am I affiliated in ANY way with Canyon College? No. Have I referred students to Canyon's psych program who have completed their degrees and are now working as professionals? Yes. Do I KNOW of students who have successfully transferred credits/degrees to other institutions? Yes. (Nothing makes my former students angrier than the suggestion that Canyon is a "diploma mill." They have all done an incredible amount of graded work that says otherwise.)
The face and delivery of education is changing, but until the traditional establishment gets out of the box, there'll always be debate about any institution which is different.
