Can someone tell me if Canyon College in Caldwell, Idaho accredited? I was told that it has a private accreditation. What is a private accreditation?

Canyon college, recognized accreditation? Or foreign student trap?

They call themselves accredited but by organizations not accredited by the DOE. So what does the accredited mean then … not much?
IT IS NOT ACCREDITED BY THE DOE this could well be a club of colleges creating a body to “accredit” themselves. And by a cryptic if not completely suspect organization called the NBOE (National Board of Education) Some affiliation with Liberia? The name sounds official enough (and is obviously intended to for a reason) but does not even have a web site.

Personally I wouldn't touch this college with a barge pole.

The only reason I'm typing this is to try stop the international students that don't know how the US accreditation system works from falling into this trap that could almost be called a scam if it wasn't legal.

I was looking at Canyon College online and the website makes the college seem so legit. YET, I am not going to put my money into a college that has no accreditation. I am really not sure as of to what I should do because I am looking for a college that handles Distance Learning and I would like to SOME HOW if it is possible get my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. :-[

Looking into their "accreditation" myself. Neither of the accrediting agencies they name seem to be legit.

Middle States Commission on Higher Education

Accreditation is important because it recognizes the degree was earned through accepted practices and coursework - faculty meet the qualifications to teach what they teach.

The only accreditation that matters is Regional Accreditation, so if a university or college does not have Regional Accreditation you might have issues transferring credits. A college that does not have Regional Accreditation might be a "real" college i.e. not a diploma mill but you may not be able to transfer credits to another university. Example: Many Bible Colleges credits are not accepted at other universities because of accreditation. Does that make sense?

They are accredited by the Central States Consortium of Colleges and Schools, it's not the most prestigious accreditation but it is real and not exactly easy to get.

I never said that they were not accredited. I said that Regional Accreditation was the only accreditation that matters. Any school can get some sort of accreditation. If you want to attend a school and be able to transfer your credits than you need to make sure you attend a regionally accredited school.

If you need financial aid, you have to make sure that you are attending a regional or nationally accredited school.

Central States Consortium of Colleges and Schools is not recognized by the Dept of Education.

It doesn't matter about accreditation once you are in the work force. The only reason you need a school to be accredited is to transfer credits. You can get a Bachelor and a Masters through Canyon and get a job all the same.

Canyon College is not accredited by the Department of Education. I would not pay tuition at a college that is not accredited! They say that they are accredited by the American Council of Private School Accreditation or (ACPSA) and that they are accredited by The American Naturopathic Medical Accreditation or (ANMAB). I looked this up at the Department of Education and both the ACPSA and the ANMAB are not recognized by the Dept. of Education so you will not be able to transfer your courses. The decision is yours to make!

Canyon is OK if you do not chose a professional program that requires state certification like Nursing... etc... Where school acreditation qualifies you for the State professional exams.

History Majors, Humanities and arts, General Business and Finance are strong enough at Canyon. It is fine. The Acreditation from Central States Consortium is a beginning for them, and they have applied for advanced acreditation and are, as I understand it, almost completed. Univ. of Phoenix started this way, and its Students are fine with those early degrees.

I passed the Last and have been accepted to The Nashville School of Law, with a History Major from Canyon. So it may be OK. I would advise to check in your local area for where you are heading with the Degree. Remember they are a non-traditional-liberal arts school, you should be able to write well enough at college level, to be OK. They really do grade hard and it is not just a Degree mill to the Professors who work for them.

The Girl in that article who completed the Nursing program did not check her state requirements for eligability to sit for the exams. And which programs are accepted by the exam board. It depends on the state you are in. Check it all out first, then decide. Canyon tells you in writing that you are rersponsible to check the requirements for any professional certifications etc. They do not guarantee that. So be careful.

They are typical as they charge 375 for Bachelors courses up to 550 for professional courses and so the expense is a consideration as any school is now a days.

I obtained my BSN, MSN, and MBA from Canyon College. I am now having to redo my BSN and MSN for my job because the accrediting agency that Canyon used is not acknowledged! This has been a nightmare!

I graduated with a MA in Counseling from Canyon College. I loved my education and have found a great job with it.
