Start up problem
Let me first say that I am a novice. My operating system is Windows XP home edition. For the past week I have had a problem when starting up. I switch on and everything looks o.k. I have three accounts set up for the family, but I am the main user. When I go into my account and attempt to type anything nothing happens. I have to go into another account and then switch back. It then works o.k. This happens regardless of which account I start in. I have scannned it for a virus but it shows clear. Can anyone please help.

Have you scanned for spyware? If not I would get AdAware and/or Spybot and check to see if you have some junk interfering with your system.

Start up
Thank you for replying to my request for help. I have run my spy program but the problem still exists. I have discovered that if I log out and come straight back I am able to type o.k. It is hassle doing this every time I want to use the keyboard. I have noticed that after logging on and before I get the user accounts display I get a blue screen appear for several seconds that tell me about a disk error.the last line informs me that this disk check has been cancelled. I am wondering if I have a problem with one of my disc. Any thoughts

Can you reproduce the EXACT error message? Have you tried doing the Error Checking (right click on the drive in My Computer and Select Properties, then Tools). Have you tried booting to Safe Mode, does the problem occur there?
It sounds like something is happening during the initial powerup process. Maybe, if I see the exact error message, I can figure out what.

Try creating a new administrator account and see if you still have the same problem. If you don't , delete the other accounts and recreate them. Just be sure to back up the documents folders of the other users before deleting them ;).
Alternatively you can try downloading the trial version of Spysweeper from our website and update it and then do a scan to see if it is a nasty bug causing this. Here is the link www.plug-n-playpc.com . The link is on the right hand side of the page.

Start up problem
First let me say thank you for the replies I have received to my problem. I think I have now solved it. My right hand control key was jammed down slightly and I think that this was causing my problem. After easing it and rebooting my computer I got the error message stating that my system was checking the file system on C drive which is Fat32. Checking for consistency. It gave a volume serial number A8E5-E897. After this check my system restarted and has worked correctly since. I have had this message on previous occasions and Always allowed it to continue. Due to the control key sticking I think that this may have caused the file check to stop.
Thank you all again for you help.

A sticking key could have caused your problem. It does sound like its been fixed.
