Computer doesn't recognize my nd-1300a
Please help if you can. I have recently installed a nd-1300a dvd burner. I did not receive a cd with it. I have tried to download the firmware, but it does not work when I run it. It does not find the target drive for the firmware. The drive is in the device manager, but in the properties, the device type is a standard cd-rom. I obviously cannot burn anything. It will read a dvd and a cd, but no burning happening here. Please help, my old lady is nagging me about it.

You said you downloaded some new firmware for the drive - did you download the drivers for it? Firmware and drivers are different things. Downloading and installing the drivers for the drive should help.

Driver
Hi,
As another answer said, since you don't have the install CD for the burner, the driver(s) for the burner hasn't yet been installed.
Here is a link for an XP driver:

What version of Windows? What brand DVD burner? External/Internal, what?
If you have XP you should not need any drivers.

Not need?
Hi,
In reply to the post about "If you have XP, you should not need any drivers",
8,613 people have downloaded the driver; NECND13_10A.EXE ; from this site, with 89% of those recommending it. It's the driver for the NEC ND1300A.
Why would these people be downloading and recommending this driver for XP?

Unless you have done a BIOS update before, I would be very leary here as doing it wrong could make your system nothing more than an expensive doorstop!
Did you go to the NEC site and see what they had available?

I suspected this file was a firmware or BIOS update not a driver. There are NO CD or DVD burner drivers necessary for Windows. These are built into Windows and the manufacturers confirm their drives to them.
I have installed several CD and DVD drives under Win XP. Every single one of them were detected by XP and loaded without inserting any disks provided by the manufacturer.

Thanks
Hi,
Thank you for pointing out that the site I gave is for a BIOS upgrade. NO, I wouldn't do a BIOS upgrade either, unless I was absolutely sure of it. As another stated, your computer might turn into a pile of trash!
The site does offer the driver, but not until you go to drivers.com, or similar, register, and have to submit your address and phone number to another advertising company,, no thanks.

Drivers
I found the website for NEC, and they even state that there is no driver for xp or me, like anyone uses that anymore. I have only seen that once. All I could find is firm-ware. We got the burner to work with DVD santa, but isn't there something out there that is better. I tried to flash it, but nothing shows up. The site states that this means the firmware is a newer version. If nothing shows up. Have not found any drivers yet. Thanks for all the help though. It has pointed me in a better direction. I will keep everything updated still, who knows, I may get it to work. Isn't there a way to just copy individual files into the disk. I thought windows could do that for cd-rw but not a dvd. I want to create storage disks out of them.

Windows XP supports CD burning, but not DVD burning. You need to get some DVD burning software (like Nero or Roxio).

Everything works now, thanks
Everything works, I can burn anything. The entire problem was a complete lack of burning programs. I have dvd santa for now, going to find something better eventually. The drive does not have drivers, the firmware was already updated on the drive from the previous owner. Yes, it was used, and I got it for the a stack of dvd-rw's that were on super sale. My computer is very slow so it takes forever to burn anything, but it works. Thanks for all the help, I have rated your posts accordingly. Thanks for the time you spent answering my ridiculous questions.
