Removing dental bonding
:oMy two front teeth have been bonded for more than 25 years. This was done because I was a very heavy smoker and my teeth were badly stained.
I never realized before how long and big these front teeth look. I feel like I look like Bugs Bunny.
I have long since quit smoking so staining is not an issue anymore and I would like to have these bonds removed. Are there any risks to my teeth in having such a procedure done and can it be done by my general dentist or do I need some sort of specialist?
By the way, I also lost considerable weight, mostly, I think, in my face so now my teeth look even bigger than before!
Thank you for anmy help and advice.:o

If there is mercury in them you need to go to a dentist that specializes in amalgam removal.

I'm in Luzerne County but near Lackawanna County. I haven't the vaguest notion where Wexford might be!

My bonding is WHITE!! I want to assume that they are porcelain. Why would you put metal on front teeth?

Yeah You should be safe with any dentist that does removal. I just thought some people like fancy like the gold teeth.

You can have the bonding removed but you will still have the staining that was being hidden. You'd be best to discuss having porcelain veneers placed. The dentist can adjust the length of the teeth with the veneers.
There is definitely NO mercury in front bonding.

Why can't I have them whitened after the bonding comes off? That was a process that did not exist when they were put in my mouth.

You can certainly try the whitening but there is no guarantee they'll whiten to the shade you are hoping for. Porcelain veneers will give you the white you want and they will stay that shade.

Did you have any decay when they put the bonding on? That is the only way they would put an amalgam filling on your front teeth. If they are just 'bonded' the removal is simple and shouldn't hurt the actual tooth. Do you rememeber if the dentist that added the bonding shaped or drilled the teeth before?since you have had the bonding for 25 years though there's always a chance you might have new decay underneath. This all can be done by a general dentist.
