Odontogentic Cyst Removed
I am facing an oral surgery to remove a cyst that has started eating away a piece of my upper jaw bone. Has anyone else had this type of surgery that can tell me what to expect?? By the way I discovered this after having an abscess come up on the right side of my face that had me swollen very badly from top of my jaw up to my eye. My eye was so swollen shut that my 22 month old grandson kept winking at me because he thought Mimi was winking at him ;) thanks in advance

The abscess you mention must have been growing there for some time in order for this cyst to become so widespread into the skeletal wall of your jaw bone. You must have experienced some pain for some time and I must say that having caught this early, you will not experience further negative results such as infection within your blood stream and effecting your heart.
No, I haven't had any experience with this type of surgery, but it is interesting and hope you will let us know the outcome.

I will keep you posted, I had a "bump" that would show up every so often on my gum, I would pop it and think nothing of it. The pain was only bad ( I MEAN BAAAD!) after waking up on Sunday morning to find my face like a balloon. I am just praying it all goes well. Thank you again for your thoughts and concern ;)

It was actually good that you kept on popping it, otherwise you would have had a bigger mess then you have now. Peridontal disease is one of the causes of heart attacks.

Ok here's the update ;) I had a cyst removed from my right jaw area, it was very large in size as it was half the size of my face. The surgery was on 9/13/07, it was day surgery but due to my sleep apnea I had to spend the night. During my surgery I also had sinus surgery at the same time. They had to remove about 4 teeth along with the cyst as this thing was all the way around to the front of my mouth, they had to start cutting right between my 2 front teeth. Anyway I healed fast and the healing was easy not a lot of pain or anything. The cyst was not cancerous, I thank God for that. So anyone facing this type of surgery, you can be rest assured that it isn't as bad as it sounds and you will be back to your old self in a matter of days. Take care and God Bless ;)

Sounds similar to a cyst I had removed from my upper left jaw. My Md. Said it was caused by a wisdom tooth. It had been there for a long time, I was asymptomatic and was found by a routine dental x-ray. It had caused a lot of degeneration of the bone(eye socket and cheek bone) and I had to have some reconstruction done. It only took the one surgery and I recovered quickly. I used an ice pack immediately following my surgery and it really kept the swelling down. I feel that that was key in a speedy recovery. Best of luck
