Can teeth be moved upward or downward and across with braces?
My daughter has a cross bite and the orthodontist is treating it with rubber bands, however he said that they may shift back to the position once the rubber band treatment stopped. He has now done this on three occasions where he started the treament, stopped and then started again. Will the teeth ever fit into place or are we wasting time?

Why rubber bands to correct a cross bite? He should have used the metal braces around each tooth and wires to tighten them. Find a different otrho guy and see what they say. At this point you're wasting time and money with the rubber bands. I had crooked front teeth and years ago when I was a kid (12) I had the metal braces put on and yes, my teeth did straighten out and stayed straight.

There are several therapies that can be used to correct a cross bite, the simplist and cheapest (if it only involves 1 tooth are by using a rubber band attatched to a bracket on the inside of the tooth needing to be shifted to a bracket attached to the outer suface of the tooth above/below. Orthodontists are specialists and are probably more that skilled to identify and evaluate the type and severity of the crossbite.

Here in Finland the rubber band technique is widely used. I would suggest to stick with it and see how it goes :)
