What's wrong with the commerce Dept ?
After Bill Richardson ;proving that pay-for -play is not just an Illinois problem , withdrew his name from consideration ,there have been many names floated . To date all of the candidates have rejected the idea;many of them emphatically.

John Kerry's name surfaced early last week ,so did Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm .Others are Rep. Xavier Becerra,Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius,Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire,Iowa's former governor, Tom Vilsack(already nominated for agriculture secretary, a less prestigious cabinet post),Citigroup director and Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons have all turned the offer down .Even incumbent Carlos Gutierrez says he plans to return to the private sector after his term is up.

Commerce has been a plum Cabinet appointment in the past .It is seventh in presidential protocol, loaded with top business contacts and full of opportunities for multiple exotic travel junkets standing up for American business.

Could it be that the current Congress and incoming President believe that Government and not the private sector is the answer to the nations problems ?

Becerra thinks so .When he turned down Obama's offer for US Trade Rep.a few weeks ago, he said his concern was "how much weight this position would hold." "I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be priority number one, and it might not be number two or number three."

Columbia University trade economist Jagdish Bhagwati has stated his concern that Obama's appointments have been top heavy with protectionists .

With more businesses facing threats of higher taxes or Stalinist-like show hearings on Capitol Hill making hard decisions about moving their base of operation overseas to more business friendly environs,it is extremely important that Obama pick a very pro-business advocate for the position... someone like Mitt Romney perhaps ? Obama has championed the concept of a "cabinet of rivals " .So far that means Robert Gates and a slew of Clintonoids. Romney would make a perfect fit for the position.

I saw a C-SPAN replay of Senators Boxer and Jack Reed, yapping about the upcoming 'stimulous plan'. They believe Congress - government - can fix the U.S. economy. LOL! The candidate can expect to be grilled for his/her socialist bona fides in confirmation hearings; and be expected to appear regularly before congressional hearings about why their socialist laws have not repaired the economy as intended by the Democrat hucksters. Obama and the press could tap-dance around these issues in the campaign, but now he must step-up to the plate.

Oh please, if they are out to kill anything it's greed and criminality in the free market. Nobody on the Dems side want's to kill capitalism, but they want to make darn sure that those American's are protected from fraud and exploitation. Our economy for the last 8 years was bought on credit by the Bush administration and the debt is historic as a result.

Free market economics worked but at the price we are paying now for greed and financial mismanagement by both the private sector and the Bush administration.

The dems simply want to restore some balance through oversight and investing in America, not exporting our jobs to China. Made in America jobs of rebuilding our roads, schools and bridges will inject much needed capital into the market to create jobs until the economy can right itself after the Bush meltdown.

"Free market economics worked but at the price we are paying now for greed and financial mismanagement by both the private sector and the Bush administration."

    Exactly - by big government.
Can the federal or state governments balance their budgets? They don't have to. Pawn off debt on the next generation and or raise taxes.

I know for a fact that some veterans pay $8 and have to split pills that Walmart offers the same pill without having to be split for $4.
That is wonderful government efficiency at taxpayor expense for you.

Maybe if corporate tax rates were not so high, multinationals would not leave the US

How about that 700 billion for TARP - that has really helped - right?

If a private sector company cannot compete - it dies. Someone called it creative destruction.
Hwen the automobile industry came along there went the buggy whip industry. Same thing happened with 8 tracks and audio cassettes. Capitalism is about delivering goods and services to the market in the most efficient way possible. Can government do that?

Government just promises more, taxes more, and takes more and gets more powerful without delivering.

Take a look at your home: is the car you drive produced by some government program? The computer your on? The kitchen appliances? The TV? All private sector products.

Thing the federal government can be credited with is the military and the interstate highways

I have not heard any protectionist rhetoric coming from the Obama appointees . In fact ;the cast of Clintonoids he has tapped into are very much global economy types.

Made in America jobs of rebuilding our roads, schools and bridges will inject much needed capital into the market to create jobs until the economy can right itself after the Bush meltdown.
I can't quite figure out the office of the President-elect's goals regarding jobs. He keeps on changing #s and this week he added in the new caveat that he wants to create and "save" jobs. It will be interesting to see how he calculates a job "saved " and how he will determine that the super-state ,with it's parallel economy ,he is constructing will have saved it.

George ;I was watching the C-Span committee hearings and the grilling of Tom Daschle... it was quite a love-fest.
